LOUSIVILLE, Ky. – Western Carolina softball’s 10 players, who were named to the Easton/National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athlete Team for the 2017-18 season, ties for the most in the program’s history. As a team, the Catamounts ranked 29th among 107 NCAA Division I programs with a 3.503 team GPA.
The Catamounts also had 10 named to the academic team in 2015-16.
Two of Western Carolina’s 10 honorees recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA: rising senior Madison Armstrong and upcoming junior Erica Hayes. Armstrong is also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District III First team selection.
The remaining members honored include Kayla Brewer (3.941), Haley Brogden (3.524), Emily Castro (3.568), Abigail Daniels (3.804), Kassandra Flores (3.955), Kinsey Liscio (3.534) and Cheyenne Mathews (3.941).
Individually, 6,280 softball players earned Easton / NFCA Scholar-Athlete honors.
The rankings and honors recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across the Association’s membership categories. NCAA Division III led the way with 1,600 student-athletes earning a 3.5 grade-point average or higher for 2017-18. NCAA Division I and Division II followed with 1,311 and 1,026 honorees.
