Post-Game Quotes

Western Carolina 33, Newberry 26

E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field

Cullowhee, N.C. - Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018

Att: 12,111

Western Carolina head coach Mark Speir

Opening Statement:

“We are excited to be 1-0 and we had a great crowd tonight. We played a tough physical football team in Newberry. We knew they would come in here and try to shorten the game and run the clock – and they did. We kept battling and finally got in the rhythm in the fourth quarter.”

“I think we got up on them 19-7 and our team kind of thought we were just going to ‘pop the clutch.’  We didn’t have a lot of rhythm and energy in the third quarter.  A lot of that is credit to Newberry and their coach Todd Knight who does a great job. We got down and Tyrie Adams got in rhythm and came through.”

On the crowd of 12,111 fans:

“Our crowd was awesome tonight; they got loud in the fourth quarter and that helped in a big way. It helped juice us up and we needed that in a big way. We are proud to be 1-0. We went into this thing know that it doesn’t matter if you win by 41 or 1 a win is what matters.”

Experience of the game for young team

“This can be the best thing that can happen to us; to win one with grit. And now, we have this off week. Sometimes a team wins big and then isn’t ready to work in the off week. We know we have to work on some things.  At times we didn’t tackle well. We had things we can learn from. I think our guys will see that and respond.

“I’m excited about this football team. We’ve got an open date and turn our attention to a good Gardner-Webb team.”

Former players making NFL rosters:

“It was a big night all-around for the Catamounts. We’re excited to see Detrez Newsome (Los Angeles Chargers) and Keion Crossen (New England Patriots)  making NFL rosters. Those are guys that weren’t highly recruited but worked hard and represented us well. I’m so happy for them.”

WCU quarterback Tyrie Adams

On Saturday night’s game:

“Very happy to get the win; a win is a win. Newberry is a very physical team. Doesn’t matter what division they are in. They came to play and they wanted it. We wanted a little more. It is not about skill, it’s about the will. That is how we played tonight.”

“Offensively we are going to be good. We are going into an open week where we can correct mistakes and we are going to get better.”

Senior LB Jacquez Williams:

On Saturday night’s game:

We gave Newberry some things and they took some things. We are young and aggressive (on defense). We can be as good as we want to be if we come together.”

On the open week:

“We will hit the film room heavy and see what mistakes we made and can correct them. This team wants to get better every day.”
