Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball coach Karen Glover announced the 2018 schedule today, which features 14 non-conference and 16 Southern Conference contests. The Catamounts will play 10 home matches including the season-opening Catamount Classic.
“We have a young team this year and I think our non-conference schedule will challenge them while preparing us for conference play,” Glover said.
For the fourth-consecutive season, WCU begins the season inside the friendly confines of the Ramsey Center as the Catamounts host the Catamount Volleyball Classic beginning on Aug. 24 against Robert Morris. WCU concludes the tournament on Aug. 25 against Charleston Southern at 12:30 p.m. and Middle Tennessee State at 6:30 p.m.
“I am excited that once again we get to open the season at home,” Glover commented. “It is a great experience to be able to start the season in front of our Catamount supporters.”
An 11-match roadtrip begins on Aug. 31 as the Catamounts make the first trip in program history to North Dakota to compete in the UND Classic. WCU faces North Dakota and Eastern Washington on Friday followed by Louisiana Tech on Saturday. The Catamounts conclude their visit to the Peace Garden State on Sept. 2 against North Dakota State.
WCU will compete in the Jacksonville State Tournament on Sept. 7-8, facing Bradley, Mississippi Valley State and the host Gamecocks. The Catamounts make the short trip to UNC Asheville on Sept. 11 before concluding the non-conference portion of the schedule at the UNCW Classic on Sept. 14 and 15 against UNCW, South Carolina State and Providence.
Southern Conference play begins on Sept. 19 as mountain rival ETSU visits the Ramsey Center. Following matches at Mercer and The Citadel, the Catamounts play seven of their next eight matches at home beginning on Sept. 26 against UNCG. Furman, Wofford, Samford and Chattanooga will also visit during this stretch. Following a return roadtrip to ETSU, the Catamounts wrap-up the home portion of their schedule against The Citadel on Oct. 19 and will honor senior Emma Tynan on Oct. 21 against Mercer.
The Catamounts close out the regular season with league road matches at UNCG, Wofford, Furman, Chattanooga and Samford.
The 2018 Southern Conference tournament is scheduled for Nov. 16-18 at UNCG.
