Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes |

Western Carolina head coach Mark Speir:
Opening Statement:
“A great day; what a great team win today. Our offense came out real sluggish to start and our defense kept battling. They kept giving the ball back to the offense. This team doesn’t panic and I was proud of that. This team keeps feeding off each other and gets going no matter what. It was a complete team win against a good football team.”

“Creating turnovers and the way the defense battled and the kick game was good. We got to keep rolling. We can’t get satisfied. Ten percent of the teams are going to get better and 90 percent are going to stay the same or get worse. We’ve got to be part of that 10 percent.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the season:
“We got a long way to go. Tomorrow is not just Sunday; it’s VMI Sunday and we have to face that new adventure and challenge. If we don’t go to VMI ready to play, they will embarrass us. That is the way this league is. I’m proud of the work our football team and coaches are doing. I’m honored to be part of it.”

Redshirt sophomore QB Tyrie Adams:
On Saturday’s game vs. ETSU:
“We just take it step-by-step and try to execute. This may be the third week in a row I’ve said this, but thank you to our defense for the way they played.”

On the play of RB Donnavan Spencer:
“Coach (Mark) Speir always says, ‘the next guy up has to do it.’ You can’t say we don’t have our All-American running back (Detrez Newsome) we can’t get it done. The next guy up has to step up and that was Donnie Spencer tonight. He did a great job.”

Redshirt freshman RB Donnavan Spencer
On being the next man up at running back:
“I knew I was going to need to be the next man up today, and I tried to do that and run hard. I told our offensive line, just give me a small crease and I will run through it. I told the offense line I was the next back up and I was going to do the job with there help.”

On bouncing back after the road loss at Wofford:
“We played so hard against Wofford and we knew we had to execute this week. We had a pep talk at halftime, and we knew we had to come out strong. We are third quarter team. We finish strong here.”

Sophomore DB John Brannon III:
Describing the interception return for a touchdown:
“The receiver just ran an inside route and I had man coverage. I saw the ball coming and I got it and took it the house.”

On the improvement of the defense:
“(Defensive Coordinator) Coach John Wiley talks about finishing plays and getting takeaways. That is what we try to do.”

Junior DB Marvin Tillman:
On the defensive improvement this year:
“We just prepare in practice. The confidence is there. Coach (John) Wiley came in and changed the scheme to keep it simple so guys could use their abilities. ‘Do what you do,’ is what he tells us. When you are there to make the play, make the play.”

On winning to start the second half of the season:
“We talked about this year not letting a midseason crisis happens to us. If we win or lose in a week, we’ve got to keep getting better the next one. We can’t be complacent.”

Thoughts about VMI coming up:
“Everybody in the conference is good. We need to prepare hard. The key is to be prepared.”
