Post-Game Quotes
Western Carolina 48, Furman 10
E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field
Cullowhee, N.C.

Western Carolina head coach Mark Speir:
Post-game thoughts:
"Obviously we have come a long way and it's because of this group of seniors. When it all boils down to it, those players are the ones out there that make the plays to win ball games and become winners. I have been saying all week, I am so proud of this group of seniors. They have taken a program that had little hope left, and now people believe. They have changed the universities excitement and perspective, they have left a legacy and that is awesome."

"I thank the good Lord for putting this group of seniors here; they were the right group of men at the right time for this program. We signed seventeen in our first class and sixteen of them are still here today and are on target to graduate -- and that says a lot about our university. These guys stuck it out, they knew they had a special bond and they could be good by believing in each other when nobody else did. I am so proud of them for what they have accomplished, it has been unbelievable watching this group of men lead and change the environment of a university."

"As this program has gotten better and the recruiting has gone up, who knows what you got on paper is a higher caliber but we try to find players to fit Cullowhee. Tonight is proof is about a group of men coming together and being a part of something that is bigger than themselves. This is the first year that we have been able to redshirt a bunch of our freshmen and not putting a true freshman on the field."

"The seniors have only lost one game at home in two years. These are our mountains and I can't say enough about these seniors and what they had accomplished for this university."

"This is about as complete a ball game, in my tenure, as we've played. Offense, defense, special teams all created big plays."

Western Carolina senior QB Troy Mitchell:
On the underclassmen play on WCU senior day:
"It felt good to think back about where we were when we first got here and to how it is now. A lot of emotions running through your head. And in the game of football, emotions run deep seeing where we are from where we were."

On securing back-to-back winning seasons:
"For a senior class to come in, we wanted to change something and be a winner. We all came in with one goal and that is to win. It showed today. We have a winning season back-to-back and it is going to keep going from here on, with each new recruit it will keep going to build a winning establishment."

Western Carolina senior LB Sertonuse Harris:
On the change at Western Carolina:
"It is an amazing feeling, honestly I can't find the words to explain it. To come from a last place team in the conference to a second place team in the conference two years in a row, it is a truly a blessing and I am going to enjoy every moment of it along with my teammates."

On the defensive effort vs. Furman:
"It was amazing. All week in practice we focused on turnovers and everyone swarming to the ball. That is what we did, everyone just said `if you mess up we got your back.' So, that is how we looked at it."

Western Carolina junior WR Steffon Hill:
On the underclassmen play on WCU senior day:
"We just came out with the mindset that we wanted to do it for them. I played today like it was my last game, to put myself in their shoes. All week, coach talked about the seniors coming from 1-9 and 2-9 and it was for them to make a difference."

On the performance of the offense:
"Everybody did their job today. The line blocked real well, and the receivers ran their routes well which allowed me to be open, it was a team effort."

On the performance of the defense:
"We definitely feed off the defense and when they create turnovers, we score. That is what they did today and we got the points."

Furman head coach Bruce Fowler:
Post-game thoughts:
"Obviously it was a one sided game from start to finish. I am really disappointed, obviously in the outcome of the game, but also just the way we played not characteristic of our team. The first half we had a couple of turnovers, but we never slowed them down the whole game and they were a lot more aggressive."

"We missed some tackles and they were getting the ball out quick on some run/pass stuff. (Western Carolina) did a really good job, so you got to give them credit too."
