Clemson, S.C. – The Western Carolina track & field teams recorded one event win and a new school record on Saturday as the Catamounts raised the curtain on the indoor season at the Clemson Opener.
"I'm excited about how we did today," head coach Jesse Norman said. "I felt like we did a good job of competing this weekend, getting lots of people through to finals. I feel like this will set us up well for winter break."
Makaila McIntyre won the women's triple jump with an indoor personal best mark of 12.18 meters (39-11.50). Kellsie Whitehead won her section of the women's 400-meter dash and finished second overall in the event with a time of 56.24. The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Dominique Delisser, Whitehead, Marissa Blakely and Mekyll Robinson won its section and placed second overall with a finishing time of 3:51.03. Robinson won her section of the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.92 and finished in third place overall. Delisser broke the tape first in her section of the women's 300-meter dash at 40.67. Lesleigh Tabor scored a fourth-place finish in the women's shot put with a toss of 13.00 meters (42-08.00). Victoria Solheim placed fifth in the women's weight throw with a mark of 17.14 meters (56-03.00).
Devaniel Dale set a new school record in the men's 300-meter dash with a time of 33.88. Dale placed fourth in the event. Fuad Hassan was the runner-up in the men's 800-meter run with as he crossed the finish line 2:00.25. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Dale, Michael Harris, Jevon Leonard and Shon Pratcher finished in second place with a time of 3:16.06. Jay Stanley finished second in the men's weight throw with a distance of 15.43 meters (50-7.5) and also won his section of the men's shot put. Pratcher led a 2-3-4 WCU finish in the men's long jump with a distance of 7.09 meters (23-3.25). Benjamin Okafor finished in third with a leap of 7.06 meters (23-02) with Tyler Hanks in fourth at 6.89 meters (22-7.25). Hanks also finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 14.26 meters (46-9.5). Alston and Pratcher both won their sections of the 200-meter dash with times of 22.17 and 22.32, respectively.
Western Carolina returns to action on Jan. 10-11 at the ETSU Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
