Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina earned its ninth straight victory on Friday night as the Catamounts downed The Citadel 3-0 in Southern Conference action inside the Ramsey Center. WCU won by scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-14.

Western Carolina improves to 11-7 overall and 5-0 in league play while The Citadel drops to 4-12 and 0-5.

On a night where she was honored for becoming the 11th player in school history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, senior Abigail Veit again paced the Catamounts with a double-double thanks to 12 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Merry Gebel had her team-best 11th double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Senior Meagan Sanchez had a match-high 18 digs. Junior Hannah Price dished out 31 assists. WCU’s team hitting percentage of .305 is its second-highest of 2019.

Sharlissa DeJesus led The Citadel with nine kills. Kenzie Kellerman had a team-best 17 digs.

The Catamounts opened the match on an 11-4 run and led by no fewer than six points for the remainder of the opening set. A block by Gebel and Johnna Robinson closed out the frame.

A kill by The Citadel's Gina Delancy opened the second set before the Catamounts scored four straight points for a 4-1 advantage. Following a DeJesus kill that brought the Bulldogs within one, 4-3, WCU went on a 9-1 run for a 13-5 advantage thanks to back-to-back kills by Gebel. The Citadel crept within seven points on a DeJesus service ace but got no closer. Madison McNally closed out the set with a kill.

The teams traded the first six points of the third set before a Caroline Perret service ace put the Catamounts ahead 4-3. With WCU leading 5-4, a Price kill ignited a 5-0 run for a 10-5 WCU lead. The Citadel trimmed the WCU lead to four, 13-9, on a DeJesus kill but the Catamounts answered with five of the next six points as the hosts led by no fewer than eight points the rest of the way.

Western Carolina goes for its 10th straight win on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Wofford. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with live stats also available.
