Cullowhee, N.C. – Already on the preseason watch list for the top offensive player honor in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) – the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award – Western Carolina redshirt senior quarterback Tyrie Adams today graced a second national award watch list. Adams appeared on the preseason watch list for the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy as the Charleston, S.C.-based group announced who it is keeping an eye on to start the 2019 season.

It is the second consecutive season that Adams has graced the CFPA preseason watch list, doing so in mid-August of 2018. This year also marks the fifth consecutive year that WCU had a player on the preseason list as Detrez Newsome made the list in both 2016 and 2017 with Adams’ predecessor at QB – Troy Mitchell – making the 2015 watch list.

A preseason first-team All-Southern Conference selection and dubbed the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, Adams has received several preseason honors entering his fifth season in Cullowhee. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native has thrice been named a preseason All-America selection, garnering second-team honors from HERO Sports and a pair of third-team plaudits from both STATS FCS and Phil Steele.

Coming off a season that saw him become just one of just 11 FCS quarterbacks all-time to pass for over 2,000 yards (2,417 yds) and rush for over 1,000 (a SoCon-leading 1,006 yds) in the same season, Adams keys a high-octane WCU offense that ranked among the national leaders in 2018 in yardage (2nd in the SoCon, 17th nationally at 464.5 yds/gm) and scoring (2nd in the SoCon, 31st nationally at 31.5 ppg).

Over his first three seasons as the starting QB, Adams has amassed 9,389 yards of total offense – second in program history and sixth in the SoCon record books. That overall mark includes 7,279 yards passing – second all-time at WCU – and 2,110 yards rushing – 11th in program history. He is just 75 passing yards shy of the school’s career benchmark and only 251 yards short of 10th-place in conference history. More impressively, overall, Adams is just eight total yards away from eclipsing the WCU football program record for total offense. Already the Catamounts’ all-time leader with 53 career touchdown passes, Adams ranks ninth in SoCon history in the same category and looks to improve that standing entering 2019.

Just two players from the SoCon were among the 40 players earning a spot on the preseason watch list. Adams was joined by ETSU sophomore running back Quay Holmes. The initial list also included the 2015 award winner, Case Cookus, the quarterback from Northern Arizona. All told, this year’s CFPA watch list is quarterback-heavy featuring 26 QBs with 12 running backs and two wide receivers making the preseason ledger.

The 2019 CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year trophy is a 22-inch, K-9 optic crystal tower with an eight-inch crystal football on top. All FCS players are eligible for the award which will be announced on Jan. 15, 2020.

Western Carolina continues its preseason practice on Tuesday morning, the second of four practices this week before the team pauses on Friday to aid in WCU’s annual Freshman Move-In Day. WCU will scrimmage this Saturday, Aug. 17 at 1 pm. All of WCU’s preseason football practices are open to the public. It is respectfully requested, though, that spectators observe from the stadium seating area and avoid being either on the field of the sidelines for safety. Practice times are subject to change.
