Salem, S.C. – Western Carolina men’s golf carded its lowest round of the spring semester – and the third-best team round of the 2018-19 season – in Saturday’s second round at 289, climbing into a two-way tie for 13th overall with a two-day score of 593, just six strokes outside the top 10 at the Clemson Invitational.
Freshman Tumi Kúld advanced 16 spots on Saturday, chopping seven strokes off his first-round 77 to card a 2-under par, 70, matching his career-low round. A product of Akureyri, Iceland, Kúld countered three bogeys with five pars in the second round for a two-day total of 147. Sophomore Michael Coe (148) slipped eight spots on Saturday into a tie for 50th despite carding his consecutive round of 2-over par 74 with freshman Louis Theys remaining tied for 54th at 149, knocking three strokes off his second round score at 73.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are sophomore Zach Caudill in a tie for 69th at 154 with consecutive-rounds of 77, and senior George Whitbread, who moved up five spots by trimming 11 strokes off his first round score, shooting even-par 72 for a combined score of 155.
Georgia Tech (543) carries a six-stroke lead over its in-state rival, Georgia (549), into Sunday’s final round. Duke sits 10 strokes off the lead pace in third, followed by the host Tigers (556) and Virginia rounding out the top five at 567.
Luke Schniederjans of Georgia Tech jumped eight spots in the individual standings on Saturday, taking over the top spot on the leaderboard from first-round leader, Adrien Pendaries of Duke. Schniederjans backed-up a first-round score of 69 with a sizzling 62 to enter the final round at 131, a stroke ahead of Pendaries (132).
Sunday’s final round at the par-72, 7,103-yard The Cliffs at Keowee Falls is scheduled to open with tee times on both the first and 10th holes at 9:00 am. Paired with golfers from Louisiana Tech and Elon, WCU’s scoring five will tee-off on the back nine beginning at 10:10 am. Live scoring is available online at GolfStat.com.
