CULLOWHEE, N.C. – On the heels of an indoor season that saw a fifth straight men’s Southern Conference title and a third consecutive women’s runner-up finish, the Western Carolina track & field teams open the outdoor season this weekend at the 49er Classic hosted by Charlotte at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.

“We’re excited for the start of the outdoor season,” head coach Jesse Norman stated. “Opening this weekend at UNC Charlotte will be a good test to see how we are doing with our training. Since our outdoor season is short this year, we’ll have to take advantage of each competitive opportunity that we have.”

On Friday, decathlon action opens the day at 9 a.m. with field events starting at 11 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw. Friday’s track action starts at Noon with the women’s 100-meter hurdles and commences with the men’s 10,000-meter run around 9:25 p.m. The men’s shot put and women’s javelin open Saturday’s action at 10 a.m. and the meet concludes at 5 p.m. with the running of the men’s 4x400-meter relay.

Live pay-per-view video for the meet is available from FloTrack. Live results will also be available via a link on catamountsports.com.

In 2018, the Catamounts swept the men’s and women’s SoCon Championships with the men’s team winning their third straight title and the women taking home the trophy for the third time in four years. A program-best 12 student-athletes qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary meet.

The Catamounts travel to Rock Hill, S.C next weekend for the Adidas Winthrop Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex.
