Boulder City, Nevada – Senior George Whitbread carded rounds of 2-over par 74 and 4-over par 76 on Friday to lead the Western Carolina men’s golf to a 10th-place standing after 36 of the scheduled 54 holes at the Jackrabbit Invitational being held at the Boulder Creek Golf Club. WCU was 11th after an opening-round 313, advancing into 10th with a second-round score of 305.
Whitbread carded five birdies on Friday, three coming in the second round for a two-round score of 150 (74-76). Sophomore Zach Caudill sat in 13th after an opening-round score of 3-over par 75, sliding into 34th after shooting 78 for a two-round score of 153. Caudill had three birdies in the first round.
Freshman Tumi Kúld jumped 20 spots between the first and second rounds, chopping six strokes off his 9-over par 81 first 18 holes with a 3-over par 75 in round two to sit tied for 47th. Sophomore Michael Coe is tied for 66th at 159 (83-76) with four birdies while freshman Louis Theys is 83rd overall with a 36-hole score of 168 (89-79).
Playing unattached as an individual, sophomore Chandler Metz is tied for 86th overall with a score of 175 (87-88).
Led by individual leader Nacho Montero (135) who has a four-stroke lead over UC Santa Barbara’s Zach Smith (139), James Madison leads the 14-team field by 14 strokes over second-place SIU Edwardsville, 578-to-592. Texas State is third at 593 while first-round leader UC Santa Barbara (594) and Weber State (604) round out the top five.
