ATLANTA, Ga. – Western Carolina softball dropped a heartbreaker at Georgia Tech Sunday morning falling 9-6 in a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Turning Point

Down 6-1 in the middle of the fifth, Georgia Tech went on to score eight unanswered runs, including the three-run walk-off home run n the bottom of the seventh, for the come from behind victory.


How it Happened

  • Georgia Tech struck first scoring off a sacrifice fly after a Catamount error allowed the eventual scoring base runner in the second.
  • Western Carolina took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third when Madison Armstrong hit a two-RBI single and a Yellow Jackets error allowed the third run.
  • Back-to-back singles by Bailey Huneycutt and Addie Pate set up a sacrifice fly by Ashlyn Long for the Catamounts’ fourth run of the inning.
  • Sophomore Kailey McNeil made the score 6-1 for the Catamounts when she hit her first home run of the season – a two-run bomb in the top of the fifth.
  • Georgia Tech knotted the game at 6-6 scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth as 10 batters saw action in the inning and scoring all five runs with two outs.  
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets won on a walk-off three-run home run with one out.


Inside the Box Score

  • Junior pitcher Kinsey Liscio cruised through four innings before she hit a wall in the bottom of the fifth allowing five runs. She did strike out four in her 4.2 innings of work and had a strikeout to end an inning twice.
  • Sophomore pitcher Kayla Brewer got the Catamounts out of the fifth inning after Liscio was relieved.
  • Senior Shaina Reed closed out the game in the circle coming into the game in the bottom of the sixth. She takes the loss falling to 1-4 giving up three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
  • Georgia Tech had nine hits while WCU ended with six.
  • Armstrong and McNeil each had a hit and two RBI in the game.


News & Notes

  • Long is on a five-game hit streak while Gibbons and McNeil have reached base safely in the last four five.
  • The six runs Western Carolina scored against Georgia Tech was the most scored by the Catamounts on the Yellow Jackets in their eight meetings.
  • McNeil hit her first home run of the season in the game.
