SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina women’s tennis collected its first victory of the season with a 6-1 bombardment of USC Upstate Sunday at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex,

Not only is it the first “W” of the season for the Catamounts, in 2019, it also marks the first win for newly minted Head Coach Bret Beaver at the helm of the program.



Western Carolina set the tone early sweeping doubles for a quick 1-0 lead in the match. The Catamounts went on to secure the match with five wins in singles.



  • The Catamounts set the tone early taking all three matches in doubles.
  • Freshman Jacy Smith earned her second victory of the season, at No. 2 singles, getting the second point of the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Marie Jardim.
  • Junior Jordan Strickland also picked up her second singles win of the season bouncing back after dropping set one 2-6. She went on to secure the victory at No. 1 singles with scores of 7-5, 10-8.
  • Junior Lauren McCall sealed the match with her win at No. 3 singles winning 6-2, 7-6 for the Catamounts fourth, and deciding point, in the match.


  • Strickland win against USC Upstate earned the 27th victory in her Catamount career moving her into a tie for third place in the Western Carolina record books. Strickland needs on more win to take over third place and four to move into second.  
  • Strickland and Smith are each 2-2 in singles to open the season.


Western Carolina returns to action Saturday traveling to Kennesaw State for a 2 p.m. match.
