BOONE, N.C. – Western Carolina women’s soccer battled back from a 1-0 deficit at Appalachian State to tie the match 1-1, in the final 30 minutes of the match and went on to win 5-3 in a penalty kick shootout in the Catamounts lone exhibition game. 

Turning Point

Tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of play, Western Carolina went on to take the match when the Catamounts nailed all five penalty kicks to take the shootout 5-3 over the Mountaineers. 


Inside the Box Score

- Appalachian State took the early lead scoring at the 27th minute on an unassisted goal.  

- At the 72nd minute, Western Carolina knotted the match at 1-1 when redshirt junior Mackenzie Wright scored from the top of the box after a foul was called on the Mountaineers.

- At the end of the 90 minutes, Western Carolina Head Coach Chad Miller and Appalachian State’s Head Coach Sarah Strickland each agreed to go to a shootout.

- In the PK shootout, Western Carolina hit all five penalty shots with Megan McCallister, Shannon Burns, Eynde Frazier, Wright and Ashton Cannon each finding the back of the net. WCU captured the win when the Mountaineers missed their second and third PK shots.
