CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball catcher Madison Armstrong has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District III First Team. First-team Academic All-District honorees, like Armstrong, advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

It is the second consecutive year Armstrong has been honored and the sixth-straight year a Catamount softball player has been named academic first team all-district III. Former WCU player Taylor Sigmon earned the honor in 2016, 2015 and 2014 and Haley Pace in 2013.

Armstrong, a junior from Gastonia, N.C., carries a 3.97 GPA in Health and Physical Education. She was a 2018 Southern Conference Second-Team All-Conference selection and 2017 SoCon Academic Honor Roll honoree.

She concludes her 2018 season with a .259 batting average with 36 hits, 24 runs scored, nine doubles, six homeruns, and 26 RBI.

The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
